Hervey Shakespear Smith
Matilda Emma Francis his wife had died in England at the age of 37 years. In 1890 Ernest Bacon Smith at the age of 43 brought the family to Australia. He left the managerial position of the Worstershire Echo Newspaper a position he had for over 20 years to become the manager of the Federal Coffee Palace Hotel in Collins St Melbourne but only had the position for three years when he died suddenly of a heart attack. At his funeral, his eldest son, Hervey Perceval Smith, was offered the position of manager of the Federal a position he held for 30 years. He left when the Federal became licensed - because of his religious beliefs - and commenced a business the Keswick Book Shop and Tea Rooms in Collins St.
