Parents names - John Burgis (farmer), and Martha Burgis. Officiating Minister - W.H. Everard, Curate

First married at the age of about 25 yrs to Charlotte Mahala Hargrave (age c.24 yrs.), 8 May 1853, at "St. Pancras" Church, in the Parish of St. Pancras, in the County of Middlesex, London, England. Further detail in the Marriage Certificate, register No. 348 includes:

They were both of 'full' age and residing at Charlton Street at the time of marriage; he a bachelor, and butcher by profession, and his father's name was John Burgis, farmer.

She was described as a'spinster', and her father's name was John Hargrave, mason. Witnesses were Francis Joseph Mapleson and Susannah Mapleson.

Details obtained from her Death Certificate No. 6971 are as follows:
Died 22 Aug 1865 at their residence in Victoria Street, Hotham (District of Melbourne North), Victoria, at age 36 years, of Dropsy Syncope. Parents' names - John Hargraves, mason, and Sarah Hargraves. Informant - Sewell Burgis (husband) of Victoria Street, Hotham. Buried 24 Aug 1865 in Melbourne Cemetery. She had been 10 years in the Colony of Victoria; was born in Wimborne, Gloucestershire; married in London at age 23 years to Sewell Burgis.
Issue were listed as - Ellen (12 yrs), Sewell (dead), and Emma (8 yrs).
* N.B. Charlotte was buried in the Burgis Family plot (i.e. Comp S, Grave No. 40, Church of England - along with a stillborn child - see below).

According to Mrs. Lowe - John Burgis apparently agreed to pay off the gambling debts of his sons Hebgin and Sewell, on the understanding that they emigrate to Australia.

Sewell was the maiden name of Martha's mother.
